The 9th-ranked Cabrini men’s lacrosse team captured its 10th consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) title with a 20-3 win over Gwynedd-Mercy College Saturday afternoon at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
The victory advances the Cavaliers to the NCAA Tournament for the ninth straight season.
Senior attackman and 2010 Tewaaraton Award candidate Casey Grugan (Ridley) was named the game’s most valuable player, totaling six points with four goals and two assists. Grugan’s first goal of the game with 3:31 remaining in the opening quarter was the 200th of his Cabrini career.
Grugan, the Cavaliers’ all-time leader in career points (330), extended the nation’s longest consecutive points streak to 74 games. He has scored at least one goal in an NCAA Division III-record 71 straight games.
Brian Hill (Ridley) and Andrew Protenic (West Chester East HS) each netted three goals while Ryan Sankey (William Tennent) had two goals and one assist and Joe Arrell (Sringfield-Delco) had a goal and two assists.
Steve Kapp (La Salle), Paul Skulski (Garnet Valley) and Bobby Thorp each scored two goals.
The Cabrini face-off unit tallied 22-of-25 draw victories. Junior face-off specialist Mike Gurenlian (Springfield-Delco) went a perfect 9-for-9 at the X. Junior Joe Strain won 6-of-8 draws.
Strain and junior midfielder Dan Terenick (Ridley) led the Cavaliers in the hustle category, each scooping a team-high five groundballs. Cabrini owned a 54-22 advantage in groundballs.
Freshman goalkeeper Erick Zarzecki recorded seven saves in 45 minutes played.
The Blue & White held a 6-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter behind six different goal-scorers. The Cavaliers built a 14-3 lead at the intermission. Cabrini out-scored GMC 8-2 in the second quarter.
Hill deposited three unanswered goals to close out the third period and open the final stanza. Sankey scored the games’ final two goals in the last 9:15. The Cavaliers’ defense kept the Griffins scoreless in the closing 30 minutes.
Sophomore attackman Matt Houk scored two goals for the Griffins in the loss. Sophomore midfielder Stefan Hetland (Garnet Valley) dished two assists.
The victory is the Cavaliers’ 96th straight against CSAC opponents, including the postseason, since the 2001 season.
Cabrini (14-3) will learn of its NCAA Tournament destiny on Sunday, May 9. The NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship brackets will be announced on CBS College Sports Network during the NCAA Lacrosse Selection Special. The selection special begins at 10 p.m.
