College wrap: Foley (Gwynedd Mercy Academy) scores seven goals to lead Louisville

Junior Bergan Foley (Gwynedd Mercy Academy) poured in seven goals and added one assists, three groundballs, two caused turnovers and a draw control as host Louisville routed Sacred Heart, 17-5, in its women’s lacrosse season opener today.

Duke 17, Richmond 9

Christie Barnes (Radnor) and Amanda Jones (Germantown Academy) each scored once as the Blue Devils improved to 3-0 with the win over the host Spiders (0-2).

Kim Wenger (Great Valley) added three groundballs and two caused turnovers and Sara Giedgowd had two caused turnovers for Duke while Molly Early (Radnor) had a goal, two groundballs and two caused turnovers for Richmond.

Syracuse 17, Colgate 5

Jackie DePetris (Archbishop Carroll) scored two goals to lead the host Orange to an easy win in its season opener.

Stanford 16, LeMoyne 9

Julie Christy (Conestoga) had a goal and three groundballs as the Cardinal opened with an easy win.

North Carolina 12, Vanderbilt 6

Freshman Emily Garrity (Strath Haven) scored her first three collegiate goals and added two groundballs, two caused turnoves and a draw control as the host Tar Heels (2-0) handled the Commodores.

Navy 14, Robert Morris 4

Freshman Kathy Young (Villa Maria Academy) collected four goals, two assists, four groundballs, two draw controls and a caused turnover as the host Mids (3-0) earned the victory,

Men

Johns Hopkins 14, Manhattan 3

Kyle Wharton (Haverford School) scored once and Matt Dolente (Malvern Prep) won 7 of 9 face-offs as the Blue Jays opened their 2010 season with an easy victory. Hopkins freshman defenseman Tucker Durkin (La Salle) led the defense and contributed two groundballs.

Syracuse 15, Denver 9

Freshman John Cugini (Springfield-Delco) won 4 of 17 face-offs for Denver, which dropped its opener to the two-time defending champions in the western coaching debut of former Princeton mentor Bill Tierney before 4,938 at the Carrier Dome.
