Bishop Shanahan senior attackman Michael Thompson has committed to play Division III lacrosse at DeSales University.
Thompson, a second-team All-Ches-Mont League pick last year, had 40 goals last year for the Eagles, who went 4-6 in the league and 7-12 overall.
Thompson said he was looking for a small school.
“I liked the fact that it was a smaller D-III school and about the same size as my high school, and that it had my major,” said Thompson, who plans to major in Pharmaceutical Marketing.
DeSales, under coach Andrew Geison, went 5-5 in the Freedom Conference and 6-9 overall last year.
“I got to meet with Coach (Geison) a few times, and liked him a lot,” said Thompson, who was also a three-year starter for Shanahan’s soccer squad.
Philly grads on the Bulldogs’ roster include: Andrew Ervin (Neshaminy), Justin Campanelli (Neshaminy), Jon Devine (North Catholic), Phil Mander (Haverford), Joe Paugh (Plymouth Whitemarsh), Craig Rogers (Haverford), Patrick McManimon (Council Rock South) and Kevin Thomer (Archbishop Ryan).
Thompson’s high school teammate, defenseman Jacob Farrell, has committed to Division III Susquehanna.
With Jon Heisman – who guided West Chester East to the state tournament last year – taking over as head coach at Bishop Shanahan this season, Thompson and the Eagles have high expectations to improve and contend in the Ches-Mont.
“I’m really looking forward to the season,” Thompson said. “I think we’ll be a lot stronger offensively.”
