La Salle University’s Jill Davis (Ridley) and Villanova’s Brian Karalunas were named the Lacrosse Players of the Year by The Philadelphia Inquirer in its yearly Academic All-Stars feature for Philly colleges.
Davis posted a 4.0 GPA with a major in elementary education and special education. A
winner of the Phillylacrosse.com Scholar-Athlete of the Week in 2009, she was picked as the IWLCA Scholar-Athlete of the year for Division I.
A First Team All-Atlantic 10 Conference honoree on the field, Davis was named the Women’s Lacrosse Scholar Athlete of the Year for the Atlantic 10 Conference and was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District team.
In addition, the senior was honored as the La Salle University Scholar Athlete of the year, which is awarded to athlete with the highest GPA. Davis was selected to the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll for every semester she was eligible to earn this award.
Davis led the A-10 with four game-winning goals and had a team best 40 goals, 14 assists and 54 points. The co-captain helped the Explorers to program records for wins and conference victories along with a all-time best No. 2 seed in the 2010 Atlantic 10 Tournament. She graduated with a 4.0 grade point average.
Karalunas was the 2010 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award Winner.
On the field, Karalunas had a standout junior season and was named to the USILA Honorable Mention All-America Team for the second consecutive year. Additionally, the long-stick midfielder was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and garnered First Team All-BIG EAST Honors.
Karalunas led the NCAA averaging 3.47 caused turnovers per game, setting a Villanova single-season record, and caused 52 turnovers for the season. The co-captain also grabbed 55 ground balls for the year and helped the Wildcats achieve a national ranking most of the year.
Karalunas also plays a significant role both in the community and in the classroom. The Philosophy and Honors major carries a 3.92 cumulative GPA and is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and National Society of Collegiate Scholars. He is a regular volunteer for the Special Olympics and the Graterford Prison Restorative Justice Program, and also donates time with the Onondaga Valley Presbyterian Church in Syracuse, N.Y.
