Middletown (Md.) junior attackman Johnny Gallaway has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Villanova University.
Gallaway scored 70 goals last year for the Knights, who went 13-5 and reached the state semifinals in the Class 2A/3A (midsize) division.
Gallaway’s father, John, played at Villanova in the early 1980s. His mother also is an alum.
“Both my parents went to Villanova and I have grown up loving the school,” Gallaway said. “I love the lacrosse program and I have known the coaches forever. They are all alums of Villanova.
“I just love the school. It’s the perfect size for me; the campus is so pretty. And academically, it’s a great school. That just made it easier for me to choose.”
Gallaway will play for head coach Michael Corrado, who led the Wildcats to a 10-5 season last year. Much of the year the team was ranked in the Top 10. Villanova also has received a verbal commitment from Gallaway’s junior teammate, defenseman Dan Goldstein.
Recently, Villanova got a verbal commitment from Foxboro (Mass.) goalie Greg Stamatov. Also, Delbarton (N.J.) midfielder Kieran Kenny has committed to Villanova from the class of 2012.
“I love the way they play and the way the coaching staff treats the players,” said Gallaway, who has 109 career goals heading into his junior year.
Gallaway said his Knights will be a force in 2011. “We went to the state semifinals last year,” he said. “We’re really trying to put Middletown on the map in the lacrosse world.
“We have a lot of really good players on our team and we’re looking to go far in the playoffs.”
