St. Joseph’s Prep senior attackman Cory Scheuerle has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Lafayette College.

Scheuerle was a First Team Catholic League South Division pick last year for the Hawks, who reached the league championship game and finished eighth in the final PA Media Rankings.

Scheuerle, a two-time team captain, has played club lacrosse for Team HEADstrong, Seven Nations and Competitive Edge. He played in the Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association Showcase in 2009 and was a member of the Fab 40 team at the Philly Lacrosse Showcase last year.

Scheuerle plans to major in Economics at Lafayette, where he will join fellow Philly recruits Brian Bock (Spring-Ford, attackman), Keegan Lawton (Bishop Shanahan, attackman) and Carl Lampe (Episcopal Academy, defenseman).

“Academics have always been the biggest factor in my college choice,” he said. “Also, with Coach (Terry) Mangin and what the whole Lafayette team has to offer, it was something I could not resist. I also love the location; it’s close enough that my parents can visit, but I’m totally away from home.”

Last year the Leopards finished 8-6 after a 6-0 start, while gaining a national ranking in the top 10.

“One thing I like is how the players make such a close group,” Scheuerle said. “They really bond. And it’s a program on the rise.”

Scheuerle is the second member of the Hawks to commit to a Division I college; midfielder Jeff Heath committed to Delaware in the spring.

The Hawks have been one of the top teams in Southeastern Pennsylvania for years. But they have lost to powerful La Salle in the league title game in each of the past seven years. Scheuerle understands the importance of the rivalry and is confident his team will be ready in 2011.

“Our expectations are really high,” he said. “We have the core of our team coming back and a bunch of players that got (varsity) experience last year for the first time. I expect a great season; we’ll see where it takes us.”
