Parkland rising senior midfielder/attackman Kurtis Kaunas has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Lehigh University.

Kaunas was a First Team Lehigh Valley Conference (LVC) pick in 2010 for a team that finished 11-8 and reached the semifinals of the LVC and District 11 playoffs. Kaunas, who had 24 goals and 19 assists, plays for the Duke’s Lacrosse Club and also was a member of the silver medal winning Lehigh Valley team at the Keystone State Games last month.

Kaunas, a member of the National Honor Society, plans to study business at Lehigh.

“I loved the coaching staff and the school’s academics and I wanted to go to a great business school,” he said. “You can’t get much better than (Lehigh). The campus is nice and it’s close to home – I live about 25 minutes from campus.”

Lehigh is coached by Kevin Cassese, who captained the US National team to the FIL championship this summer. The Mountain Hawks went 8-7last year, winning five of their final seven games.

Kaunas also plays for the state-ranked Parkland football team as a running back and serves as a captain. Last year he helped the Trojans reach the Class AAAA quarterfinals.

Kaunas, also a co-captain in lacrosse last year, believes Parkland will challenge in the LVC in 2011.

“This year our rivals lose a lot of key players and I think we can compete for the District 11 championship,” he said.
