Women’s recruit: North Penn defender Hanrahan feels at home with commitment to St. Joseph’s University

North Penn senior defender Brittany Hanrahan has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at St. Joseph’s University.

Hanrahan, who plans on majoring in either education or nursing, felt at home on St. Joseph’s city campus and instantly loved the school’s lacrosse program.

“I knew what I was looking for in a team,” Hanrahan says. “St. Joe’s is the best fit for me because I know that I’ll be competing at a high level against good players. Coach (Denise) Roessler is tough but she’s motivating. I know I’m going to be worked hard and be made into a better player because of it.”

Hanrahan was a first-team All-Suburban One Continental Conference, an Honorable Mention All-American and a third-team All-Phillylacrosse.com pick for the Maidens in 2009.

Hanrahan helped North Penn win the Continental Conference with an undefeated record, finish sixth in District 1 and qualify for the first Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association championships.

Hanrahan was elected as captain for next season at North Penn, a role that she is eager to fill.

“We have a lot of building to do because we lost eight starting seniors, but I hope to accomplish even more this year,” Hanrahan said. “There have been a lot of great girls before me who I really look up to and who have taught me a lot. I want to be able to motivate the underclassmen and continue North Penn’s winning tradition.”

Hanrahan is one of four North Penn seniors to commit to a Division I college. The others are midfielder Danielle Horn and defender Kaitlin Colbridge (both La Salle) and attack Abbie Hartman (Delaware). At St. Joseph’s, Hanrahan will join North Penn grad Julie Mineweaser, a sophomore that had 16 goals last year.

Seniors can sign National Letters of Intent to Division I colleges during the early signing period Nov. 11-18.
