Abington rising senior attack Kate Cooper has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse for Lehigh University.
Cooper, who earned Academic All-American and Honorable Mention All-Phillylacrosse.com honors in 2009, is considering Lehigh’s business and engineering programs.
“Lehigh’s academic reputation put it on the top of my list over other schools,” Cooper said. “I also went to its lacrosse camp and I met the incoming freshmen and felt really comfortable on the campus, and with the team.”
Cooper said she not only likes the academic tradition at Lehigh, but also is pleased with the ambitious lacrosse program under Ursinus graduate Jill Redfern, a second-year coach.
“Coach Redfern is excited about the program and how it’s going to make an impact,” Cooper said. “The incoming freshmen are awesome and she’s enthusiastic about the strength of our program.”
Last season, Cooper helped Abington win the Suburban One National Conference and make it to the third round of District 1 play. Cooper was a first-team All-Suburban One National pick as the Ghosts went 18-5.
Cooper played on the Philly team that placed third in the second annual Under Armour Underclassmen Games this summer after playing on the team in 2008. She also participated in the National Tournament with Philly 3 in May.
Cooper is the second Abington rising senior to commit to a Division I college. Also, attack Liz Wilson committed to Delaware. Rising seniors can sign a National letter of Intent during the early signing period, Nov. 11-18.
