The U.S. World Cup team has named midfielder Michele DeJuliis (owner of Philly-based Ultimate Goal Lacrosse Club, assistant coach at Princeton) as its captain for the upcoming 2009 FIL Women’s World Cup, which commences with opening ceremonies Wednesday in Prague, Czech Republic.
DeJuliis, playing in her first World Cup after spending the last 15 years in the U.S. national teams program, will lead Team USA in its bid to recapture the gold medal. The U.S. lost to Australia in the 2005 gold medal match in Annapolis, Md.
“I don’t think any of us have seen the full potential of Michelle DeJuliis, and I don’t think we really will. I think you’ll be able to see the potential physically on the field, but to know what happens behind the scenes with people like that — she’s an irreplaceable piece that can draw so many great things out of others,” said Team USA head coach Sue Heether.
The official roster was released today as well. DeJuliis (uniform No. 12) is joined by fellow Philly players Holly McGarvie (Ultimate Goal coach and Princeton grad, uniform No. 7), Michi Ellers (Strath Haven, No. 4), Regina Oliver (Pottstown, No. 14) and Whitney Douthett (Newtown native, No. 27).
