Under Armour and Corrigan Sports Enterprises has announced that they will be adding four new regions – Upstate New York, New England, Long Island and the Midwest – to the Underclassman Tournament, bringing the total to eight boys’ and eight girls’ teams that will compete in the event at Towson University on June 27 and 28.
The tourney has become one of the hottest college recruiting events in the country. Along with All-Star teams from Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington D.C. and New Jersey, the four additions will allow the event to include pool play on June 27 and June 28 then a four-team championship tourney later on June 28.
Tryouts will be held in each region in May and June. The 24 best players in each region will be selected to represent their region at Towson as there region fights for the Under Armour Underclassman Championship.
“We have had many requests by a number of regions to expand the event. The timing of our expansion is perfect considering the void that has been created by the cancelling of the Empire Games” said Lee Corrigan, Event Organizer.
“Under Armour is proud to continue and expand our involvement in the game of Lacrosse,” added Steve Battista, VP of Brand Marketing for Under Armour. “Thus far we have been able to attract the best of the best and by adding these new regions we will be sure to attract even more talent.”
Last year the Philly boys’ team split its two games in the Under Armour tourney, falling to New Jersey, 10-9 in the finals after whipping host Baltimore, 10-5. The Philly girls’ team lost twice. Click here forPhillylacrosse.com’s coverage of the 2008 Under Armour Senior and Underclassmen games.
The Underclassman Tournament is part of the Under Armour All-American Games that features the very best 44 Senior boys’ and girls’ from around the country squaring off against each other in a North vs. South format. Once again players for the Under Armour All-American Sr. Games will be selected in May by Inside Lacrosse.
The girls’ Senior game will be held at 5:30 p.m. on June 27, followed by the All-American Boys’ game. Last year Philadelphia was represented with five players in the boys’ game, Malvern Prep’s Chris Layne and Matt Mackrides (could not participate due to selection to USA U-19 team), Downingtown East’s Owen Blye, Haverford School’s Peter Borror and La Salle’s Conrad Ridgway (Penn State).
Radnor’s Kelly Barnes represented Philly in the girls’ game.
In the coming weeks announcements will be made on the Coaches of the Sr. Games, Sr. Player nominations and Underclassman tryout dates in all 8 markets.
Under Armour noted that players must register at least 48 hours prior to your first tryout date to be included in the coaches booklet.
