Strath Haven girls crush Hempfield, 23-7, to advance to PIAA semifinals; Springfield-D boys top Carlisle

Ana White (five goals, two assists), Emily Garrity (four goals, seven assists) and Annalise Penikis (four goals, two assists) had big days and Kelly Ruffini (three goals) reached 100 career goals to lead Strath Haven to a 23-7 rout of Hempfield today in a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) quarterfinal girls’ lacrosse playoff at Exeter.

The win advances the Panthers into Tuesday semifinals against the winner of tonight’s Springfield-Delco/Unionville winner at a site and time to be determined.

Ruffini’s second tally of the game gave her 100. Also, Jenna Frost had two goals and two assists and Lela Meunier had 10 saves for the Panthers (20-4), the District 1 third-place finisher. Hempfield, the District Three third-place finisher, ended at 18-7.

Manheim Township 13, Peters Township 10

Sophomore Molly Curcio scored four goals and Rachael Rosenfeld added three as the District 3 champion Blue Streaks (20-4) advanced to the semifinals Tuesday to play Radnor.

Boys

Springfield-Delco 7, Carlisle 4

Austin Kaut made 11 saves – many of them key stops – and the Cougars (19-5) got their attack moving in the middle quarters to down the Thundering Herd (18-8) and advance to the semifinals Tuesday against Conestoga at Harriton (1 p.m.)

The game was scoreless after one quarter and then Joe Venit (two goals, one assist) scored twice around a tally by Colin Keegan (two goals, one assist) to make it 3-0.

Tyler Getz drew the Herd within 3-1 before the half and Joel Miller made it 3-2 early in the second half, but Springfield’s John Cugini, Keegan (Keith James assist) and Josh Cavanaugh (Larry McLaughlin assist) stretched the lead to 6-2.

Cavanaugh made it 7-2 in the fourth and Elliott Metzger scored in the final minute to make it 7-4.

Springfield-Delco 0-3-3-1 – 7

Carlisle 0-1-2-1 – 4

Springfield-D: Josh Cavanaugh 2g, Joe Venit 2g, Colin Keegan 2g, John Cugini 1g. Austin Kaut 11 saves.

Carlisle: Tyler Getx 2g, Josh Miller 1g, Elliott Metzger 1g. Chris Dymski 10 saves.

Manheim Township 6, Mt. Lebanon 5

Ohio State recruit Dan Wertz scored four goals as the District 3 champion Blue Streaks (20-5) advanced to the semifinals Tuesday against La Salle. Last year Manheim Township fell to La Salle, 7-5, in the state championship game.

Quint Miller added two goals for Township.
