Souderton senior defender Andy Nagy said choosing to commit to attend Army at West Point was his way of committing to a life-long role as a leader.
‘I always liked to be in a leadership position,” said Nagy, the Laxzilla Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week. “I do like to help out, and I like to take charge. There are opportunities in the military. To me, it seemed that West Point was the best way to reach my goal.
“That’s my dream.”
Nagy has always enjoyed being a leader. In the classroom, he takes Honors and AP classes and has a GPA over 3.5. In the community, he volunteers with the
North Penn United Way’s Leadership Team as a committee member who tries to recruit others to volunteer. He is also an Eagle Scout in Harleysville and participates in community events.
On the field, Nagy is a co-captain trying to help a young team with a new coach (Todd Pettit) stay competitive in the Suburban One American Conference.
Nagy, who plans to major in International Politics, says he was always interested in the military.
“West Point seemed like an excellent opportunity to get one of the nation’s top educations,” he said. “I’d like to get that commission as an officer into the Army and do my duty to our country I believe that some people have to do that.”
Nagy’s duties also extend to the Indians’ youthful lacrosse team, which is off to a 1-2 start.
“This year we have a whole new coaching staff and that basically gives the team a whole new structure,” he said. “This is my fourth year on the varsity and my fourth head coach, but this is actually the first promising year we’ve had.
“We are really young, though. I’m glad to be a captain and I will help the team make the transition.”
