Womens’ recruit: Pottsgrove senior midfielder Delaney signs National Letter of Intent to play at Long Island University

Pottsgrove senior midfielder Ashley Delaney has signed a National Letter of Intent to play Division I lacrosse at Long Island University (Brooklyn).

Delaney was a Pioneer Athletic Conference first-team pick in 2009 when she led the Falcons in scoring with 56 goals and 33 assists while adding 55 draw controls, 45 forced turnovers and 25 interceptions. In three years, Delaney has 174 goals (tied for school record) and 93 assists as well as 164 draw controls.

Delaney chose Long Island because of its big-city appeal.

“I always wanted to be in the city,” Delaney said. “It’s weird to say, but I felt comfortable there; not intimidated. There are a lot of opportunities interning right there. Being in the city, everything is right there.

“I am going in undecided, but probably I’ll pick something art-related such as art history or graphic design.”

Delaney, who was named Team MVP honors in 2009, also played for the Philly 3 squad that competed in the National Tournament in May and has played for the PA Express club team

Delaney will be joined at LIU by fellow PA Express teammate Trisha Yeoell (Downingtown West) and Bishop Shanahan’s Gina Eberwein.

“Trisha and I went on our visits together,” said Delaney. “It will be nice to have her there, too.”

Last year the Blackbirds went 2-6 in the Northeast Conference and 4-13 overall.

Delaney is optimistic about her senior year with the Falcons. Last year Pottsgrove reached the PAC-10 Final Four, losing to six-time champion Boyertown in the semifinals.

“We lost some big players, but if we work hard we will be fine,” said Delaney. “It all depends on how we practice.”
