Phoenixville senior attack Liz Jones has signed a letter of intent to play next year at Division II Philadelphia University.
Jones, who earned first-team All-Pioneer Athletic Conference honors and scored 80 goals this year, was recruited by a number of Division I schools. She also considered Division II power West Chester, but settled on the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference champions.
“When I went to Philadelphia University, I loved the diversity and I felt like I fit in,” said Jones. “Also, one of my best friends (soccer player Denna Allen of Phoenixville) is going there and has had a really good experience. Everything kind of clicked for me.”
Jones plans to major in fashion merchandising and possibly environmental sustainability.
Jones said she chose a Division II school because she wants to focus first on academics.
“I love lacrosse and I am a very intense player, but I also want to do my studies and whatever else I want to focus on,” she said. “I want to be fixed on my education, that was a big thing for me.
“I also am glad to play for a team that won its league championship. They started kind of slow, but their freshmen stepped up and ended up being the top scorers on the team.”
Jones will bring an impressive ledger to Philadelphia University. She scored 237 career goals and assisted on 73 more for the Phantoms despite playing defense as a freshman.
“My coach (Jen Foresta) stuck me on defense and had me play the team’s top scorer as a freshman,” Jones said. “Once I started proving I could score, she put me on offense.
“But I would be happy to play wherever the coach puts me in college. I have no preference.”
