Hofstra University freshman midfielder Maryann Miller (Ridley) was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Rookie of the Week.

It was the first rookie honor for Miller, who shared the award with Mary Teeters of Towson. Miller continued her early season strong play as she tallied a hat trick in Hofstra’s 19-5 victory over Mount St. Mary’s on Wednesday.

It was the second hat trick of the season for the heralded freshman, whose nine goals this season ranks third on the team. She has 10 points in total this year, and that total is good for fifth on the squad.

Miller also added a ground ball and a caused turnover against Mount St. Mary’s. Miller, who has started four of the last five games for Hofstra, also has four ground balls, four caused turnovers and three draw controls this season.

St. Joe’s Tursi named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week

St. Joseph’s senior Helene Tursi was named Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week for scoring nine goals last week in two games. She had a career-high seven goals at Villanova on Thursday in a 18-4 Hawk victory. She followed that up with a two-goal showing against Old Dominion (14-10 loss) to up her 2009 goal total to 18. Tursi, who prior to the 2009 season had collected just nine goals in 36 games, matched the number in the two games last week alone.

Tursi is the fifth different SJU player to earn a weekly award this season. Suzy Herlihy (Co-Player of the Week), Meghan McDevitt, Julie Mineweaser and Jen Peters (Rookies of the Week) have also been honored by the Conference.

Loyola’s Filippelli (Archbishop Carroll) is Big East Defensive Player of Week

Cara Filippelli (Archbishop Carroll’s) picked up her second Big East Defensive Player of the Week award in as many weeks after helping Loyola beat two ranked teams – No. 14 Cornell and No. 16 James Madison – last week.

The sophomore defensive midfielder scored four goals, three against James Madison on Saturday, leading the Greyhounds (6-1) to a come-from-behind victory over the Dukes, 10-9.

Filippelli scored the game-winner with just under five minutes remaining and then helped the Loyola defense hold off two Dukes’ chances in the final two minutes. She also caused four turnovers and picked up three ground balls against James Madison.

On Wednesday, Filippelli had a goal and an assist versus Cornell. She controlled a game-high four draws versus the Big Red and caused three turnovers. She leads the team with 16 caused turnovers and is second on the squad with 19 ground balls this year.

Drexel’s Manos wins Rookie award for 3rd time

Drexel freshman goalie Mark Manos earned his third CAA Rookie of the Week honor this season after helping Drexel to an 11-9 non-conference win over  Lafayette Saturday.  The rookie recorded his fifth 10+ save game of the year by stopping 14 Lafayette shots.  Manos also picked up the third victory of his career Saturday.  The West Chester, Pa., native ranks third in the league with a goals-against average of 8.18 heading into CAA play this weekend.
