La Salle senior midfielder Gordie Wells has committed to play next year at Fairfield University.

Wells will join his brother, Clay Wells, a sophomore midfielder. Gordie said, though, he originally did not intend to follow his brother.

“At first I really wasn’t too interested in it because my brother was there,” he said. “But I took a second look in November and Fairfield felt like the place for me.”

Wells said he plans to study one of the sciences.

“I just love the location (Fairfield, Conn.) and when I visited my brother I saw it was right on the shore,” Wells said. “I thought the campus was really nice.

“My brother is actually pretty happy about it. We’re pretty close and he likes the idea of us playing together. It should be a lot of fun.”

So far, the Explorers’ season has not been a lot of fun. Defending state champion La Salle, picked to be one of the top teams in the nation by all observers, has started 1-3 and lost two games to Maryland powers (Gilman School and Calvert Hall) last week in overtime. In both games, La Salle went out to large leads, had one-goal leads in the end of regulation and then lost the games after making some key mistakes.

“Of course everyone rally disappointed,” he said. “We had them (both) and shut down at the end and let them come back in. We just have to finish these games.”

Today the Explorer host Malvern Prep in a key game between the teams that reached the finals of the Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association playoffs last year.

“I think right now it has hit us that our reputation isn’t going to win us games,” Wells aid. “We still have to work hard. We definitely know what we can do it.

“We know we should have won those game. It’s the little things here and there we can fix.”
