Emmaus senior midfielder Mic DeBellis has signed a letter of intent to play next year at Siena College.
DeBellis, a first-team all-Penn Valley League pick last year, is choosing a major between environmental science and creative arts.
“I like the location of the school,” said DeBellis. “It’s right outside of Albany (N.Y.) and it’s in the Adirondacks. I might do some hiking.
“I liked the coaching staff; (head coach Brian) Brecht and (assistant Eric) Wolf. They are younger guys and the team is coming around. They did pretty well last year and they are only getting better.”
DeBellis also figures to be part of a good team this year. The Green Hornets won the league crown last year and move into the Lehigh Valley Conference as the clear-cut favorite.
“I think we should do real well,” DeBellis said. “We only lost three seniors and we look a lot stronger.”
DeBellis is anxious to get a shot at reaching the state tournament out of District 11. This year Emmaus – coached by Ridley grad and former Penncrest coach Jef Hewlings – is playing a host of Southeastern Pennsylvania contenders. Some of the non-league foes include Ridley, Conestoga, Springfield-Delco, Penncrest and Garnet Valley of the Central League as well as Malvern Prep and St. Joseph’s Prep.
“I definitely think we can compete,” said DeBellis, who has played with a number of Philly players on the Duke’s Lacrosse Club. “Our coach knows the game real well and we play with those guys all the time in the summer. It’s not like we don’t know what’s coming.”
