Senior Tom Manes, an Archbishop Ryan graduate, has been named a co-captain for St. John’s, coach Jason Miller announced. Manes will be joined by Jerry Nevin, and Gavin Buckley as the 2010 team captains.
“I’m very pleased with the effort Tom, Jerry and Gavin have given us,” Miller said. “Over the last three years, these guys have been major contributors on the field, and I couldn’t ask for a better example for our team to follow in the classroom, on campus or in the community.”
Manes, a midfielder from Philadelphia, returns for his fifth season with the Red Storm after redshirting his senior year due to a foot injury. In the three games before his injury, Manes collected five points on two goals and three assists.
During his junior year, the midfielder ranked as high as 54th in the nation in assists per game. Manes has tallied 50 points in his career with 31 assists and 19 goals. An ECAC All-Academic team honoree, Manes also made the Dean’s List as an undergrad.
Nevin, a defender from San Francisco, Calif., returns to lead a young but talented defensive corps. In his career, Nevin has collected 30 ground balls and caused 15 turnovers while defending the goal. Last season, Nevin started and played in all of the team’s 14 games and set a new career high of three ground balls and two caused turnovers in the Red Storm’s 10-9 upset of fifth-ranked Georgetown.
Buckley, an Owings, Md., native, enters his senior season as goalkeeper ranked eighth all-time in Red Storm lacrosse history with 220 saves. Last season, Buckley recorded 180 saves and led St. John’s to a 5-1 record and a national ranking in the team’s first six games. His 15-save effort in a win over Georgetown earned him ECAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
A St. John‘s Presidential Scholar, Buckley was named to the ECAC All-Academic Team with the second-best GPA in the entire conference.
The trio will be leading a young team of 28 underclassmen, including 17 freshmen, one redshirt freshman, seven sophomores and three redshirt sophomores, through the team’s first year in the newly-formed BIG EAST lacrosse conference.
St. John’s will open the 2010 season at home on Feb. 20 when it hosts Holy Cross. The Red Storm is currently slated to play exhibition games against the University of Massachusetts and Lafayette College starting on January 30.
