Lawrenceville School senior midfielder Clay commits to Haverford College

Lawrenceville School (N.J.) senior midfielder Christian Clay has committed to play Division III lacrosse at Haverford College.

Clay, of Montchanin, Del., helped Lawrenceville finish 13-6 and win the Mid-Atlantic Prep League and New Jersey state prep schools championship in 2009. He also plays for the Philly-based Duke’s Lacrosse Club.

Clay said he liked the combination of academics and athletics at Haverford, which last year went 13-4 and hosted its first NCAA playoff game ever.

“I wanted to play lacrosse at the next level and also attend a great school,” Clay said. “Some good Division I schools and some Ivy League schools were looking at me, but this fit my needs academically and athletically.”

Clay is considering studies in Sports Economics or Sports Medicine.

He now is focused on the 2010 season, one that features games against two-time defending PA state champion la Salle as well as Inter-Ac League powers Haverford School, Malvern Prep and Episcopal Academy.

“Our team is looking pretty good,” he said. “We lost about 17 seniors, but we have a few post-grads (including La Salle graduate Westy Hopkins) and a lot of younger players that are stepping up.”

Another Philly senior, Conestoga’s Zach Jacobs, also recently committed to Haverford College.
