About 1,000 fans stuck around in near-90 degree weather for the last of the 26 games in the 9th Annual Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival today at Radnor High.
The reason: a perfect matchup of two undefeated boys’ teams. The game did not disappoint as Ian Correia’s wrap-around goal with 24.2 seconds to play in overtime gave St. Joseph’s Prep a 12-11 victory over Conestoga.
The Prep, ranked No. 4 in the PA Media Lacrosse Rankings, improved to 7-0. Top-ranked Conestoga, also was ranked No. 6 in the Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse National Power Rankings, fell to12-1.
Correia’s dramatics came after the Pioneers scored two goals in the final 67 seconds of regulation to send the game into OT. Paul Mita had the first and Matt Smith tied it with 4.5 seconds left off a feed from Jason Klunder (two goals).
But in OT, the Hawks controlled possession and Correia (two goals) went around the left corner of the cage, beat his defender and then goalie Peter Zonino, setting off a massive celebration by St. Joe’s fans.
“When I was taking it behind, I thought I was sick and tired of playing this game,” Correia said. “We should have won it in regulation. I felt I could put it in.”
Brendan Glynn led St. Joe’s with four goals and goalie Mike Zikoski made eight saves.
“We knew they weren’t going to give us anything and that we’d have to take it,” said Glynn. “We all played our game. They’re a hulluva team, but I think we were there when we needed to be. It’s a testament to our character; we dug deep and we got it.”
Conestoga led, 6-4 late in the first half, but sophomore Cory Scheuerle (three goals) drew his team within 6-5 with 30 seconds left in the quarter and The Prep scored three more times to take an 8-6 lead before Conestoga rebounded to tie it, 8-8 at the end of the quarter.
The Hawks later took an 11-9 lead on a goal by Colin Fleming with 4:56 to play in regulation.
St. Joe’s has little time to enjoy the win; on Tuesday they travel to No. 2 La Salle to meet the team it will have to beat to win the Catholic League and qualify for the first Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association playoffs.
“We are still going to take it one game at a time; I don’t even think we’ve peaked yet,” said Correia. “We still have a few things to work on, and we’ll come out firing for La Salle.”
Conestoga, which leads the Central League, must regroup for a key game Tuesday at second-place Radnor.
“I told them I was proud of them just to battle back and stay in the game,” said Conestoga coach Brian Samson. “I think a lot of that was Ryan Buttenbaum winning a ton of face-offs.
“I think they had a good game-plan. They had a great individual play to win it. It’s only a loss and we have to learn from it.”
