Men’s recruit: Episcopal Academy senior midfielder Gordon likes balance of academics and athletics at Bucknell

Episcopal Academy senior midfielder Andrew Gordon has signed a National Letter of Intent to play Division I lacrosse at Bucknell University.

Gordon was an Inter-Ac League Honorable Mention pick in 2009 when he helped the Churchman finish 13-8 and place third in the league standings.

Gordon, who plans to major in Economics, said the Lewisburg school offered the best balance of academics and athletics. Gordon is one of two EA seniors to sign with Bucknell; the other is defenseman Jackson Place.

“I felt that academically and athletically it was the best fit for me as a student-athlete,” he said. “I love the academics, and the size of the school. The campus is beautiful and I have a lot of respect for the coaches.”

The Bison, coached by Frank Fedorjaka, fell to Navy, 9-8, in the Patriot League championship game last year. Bucknell went 9-7, and was 6-0 in the conference during the regular season.

“I thought the coaches would be really mentors for me as a player and a person,” said Gordon, who plays for the Mesa Fresh 2010 club team.

Gordon said the Churchmen have high expectations for 2010. He knows Haverford School is loaded with juniors and seniors that have committed to Division I colleges and Malvern Prep again will be a league power. But he is confident EA will again contend for the title.

“I know we lost (Matt) Lerman in goal,” said Gordon, of the All-State goalie who is now at Syracuse. “But we have lost of our talent back. Although we may be an underdog, I fele as though we’re going to work as hard as we can and that we’ll leave everything on the field.

“We’re working hard in the weight room and when we go against teams like Haverford Ford and Malvern Prep we’ll try to show them what we have.”
