Three Philly girls sign with Great Valley grad Morgan at Hofstra

Springfield-Montco’s Lauren Chandler, Merion Mercy’s Emily Corzel and Downingtown West’s Casey Kellogg are three of nine student-athletes to sign National Letters of Intent to begin playing for Hofstra in the 2009-10 academic year for head coach Abby Morgan, a 1997 Great Valley graduate.

Chandler, an attacker, is coming off a strong junior season, scoring 46 goals while earning Second-Team All-Suburban One American Conference. In three seasons for the Spartans, the 5-6 scoring threat has accumulated 75 career goals. Chandler will finish her senior season as a 12-time letter winner, playing varsity lacrosse, water polo and swimming every season since her freshman year.

“Lauren will bring a workhorse mentality to our program,” Morgan said. “She has an unwavering work ethic and an overwhelming desire to improve and do whatever it takes for her team to win.”

Corzel is coming off a 2008 campaign in which she helped the Golden Bears to a runner-up finish in the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies. The 5-9 Pennsylvania native plays both midfield and defense and earned All-Star honors in both lacrosse and soccer.

“Emily is a player who will continually improve here at Hofstra,” Morgan said. “An accomplished student, she does anything that is asked of her on the field.”

Kellogg is entering her fourth year playing for Downingtown West. As a junior, she earned First-Team All-Ches-Mont National Conference while helping the Whippets win the conference championship and advance to the District 1 Class AAA semifinals. The 5-6 midfielder has played in the Upper Atlantic National Tournament the past two seasons.

“Casey is the glue for both her high school and club teams,” Morgan said. “She has immense lacrosse knowledge and has an air of finesse to her game that makes everything look easy.”

The other six recruits are: Taylor Albright (Morristown, NJ); Jacquelyn Ardolino (Shirley, NY); Claire Brady (Sykesville, MD); Jill Maier (Honeoye Falls, NY); Elizabeth McIntosh (Owings Mills, MD); and Emily von Hollen (Severna Park, MD).

Hofstra opens the 2008 campaign on Saturday, February 21 when they host Iona College at 3 p.m. After hosting Connecticut on February 25, the Pride will embark on a string of games that will see them play five road games in a six-game span. Included in the road contests are games at defending national champion Northwestern (March 12) and Notre Dame (March 14).

Last year Morgan guided the Pride to a 7-9 season. She is 19-16 in two seasons as head coach. Morgan starred at Connecticut and was recruited there by former coach Bonnie Rosen (Harriton), now the coach at Temple.
