Malvern Prep midfielders Chris Layne and Matt Mackrides, Downingtown East attacker Owen Blye, Haverford School defender Peter Borror and La Salle midfielder Conrad Ridgway join Radnor midfielder Kelly Barnes on the Under Armour boys’ and girls’ All-American teams.
The Under Armour team recognizes 44 boys’ and girls’ senior players and separates them into North and South teams that play in the Under Armour Lacrosse Classic at Towson University’s Johnny Unitas Stadium on Saturday, July 12. The boys’ game will be televised live on ESPNU at 8:00 p.m. EDT.
Barnes, who has helped the Red Raiders to a 20-0 start, the No. 1 ranking in the Phillylacrosse.com Poll and a berth in the District One Class AA quarterfinals, is headed to Georgetown. She is on the North team.
For the boys, Mackrides has helped the Friars to the No. 1 ranking in the Phillylacrosse.com Poll and a berth in the Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association (EPSLA) quarterfinals. He also is a member of the U.S. Under-19 National team and was named Most Important Player in the Inter-Ac League.
Mackrides, bound for Penn State, is the lone boy who will play on the North team. Blye (Maryland), Ridgway (Penn State), Layne (North Carolina) and Borror (Virginia) are on the South team.
Blye has helped the Cougars win the Suburban League and advance to the EPSLA quarterfinals. Ridgway helped the Explorers reach the EPSLA quarterfinals and win the Catholic League crown while being named North Division MVP. Layne helped the Friars take the top seed in the EPSLA tourney, and Borror has helped the Fords into the EPSLA quarterfinals.
The 2008 Classic features 88 players from 14 states, including players from as far as Arizona, California, and Colorado. With 26 players, New York has the most participants, followed closely by Maryland with 25 players. There are six form Pennsylvania, all from the Philadelphia area.
This year will also feature an expanded underclassmen tournament with teams from Baltimore, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. The Underclassmen Girls’ and Boys’ Championships will be played at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m., respectively, followed by the Girls’ All-America Game at 6:00 p.m. In addition, a full day of events is scheduled for attendees, beginning with the STX Lacrosse Youth Clinic at 9:00 a.m.
