Girls’ lacrosse: Quick start fuels Cardinal O’Hara girls past Prendie, 20-3

Heading into its Catholic League Southern Division and season opener Wednesday against rival Archbishop Prendergast, host Cardinal O’Hara wanted to get off to a quick start.

One person knowing the importance of the quick start for the Lions was junior Steph McCoy. All McCoy did was pour in four first-half goals and five overall as O’Hara roared to an 11-1 halftime lead en route to a 20-3 victory.

“It was very important to come out strong we beat them pretty good last year but we couldn’t overlook this team,” said McCoy.

The Lions were playing without injured seniors Natasha Ciminera and Bernadette Grandieri. But several underclassmen came to the rescue as sophomore Megan George scored four goals while sophomore Lindsay McArdle contributed two goals and two assists.

Meanwhile, junior Amanda Mattera and freshman Steph Fratoni added two goals each.

“It was very, very important for us to come out strong,” said O’Hara coach Marie Paolucci. “We have one league game down many more to come.”

Also scoring for O’Hara were senior Rebecca Worthington, junior Emily Scanlon, junior Julia Costello, Jenna Moran and freshman Emily Rowe.

Goalie Julie Olley posted 13 saves for Prendie and Brittany Scanlan, Danielle Ryan, Lauren Rovinsky scored once each.

The Lions next face Haverford Friday at 3:45 and they gear for their next Catholic League contest April 4 against last year’s runner-up, Archbishop Wood. Prendie faces a stern test in its next game when it meets seven-time defending league champion Archbishop Carroll in Radnor April 2.
