Girls’ District One wrap: Great Valley rolls; Merion Mercy wins

Kim Wenger collected five goals and five assists and Keelin Hood fired in seven goals as host Great Valley whipped Marple Newtown, 25-9, Wednesday in the first round of the District One girls’ Class AA tournament.

The top-seeded Patriots (17-3), ranked fourth by Phillylacrosse.com, led, 17-2, at halftime. They will host Phoenixville – a 16-13 winner over Sun Valley in the quarterfinals Tuesday.

Brittany Greaves had five goals and two assists for Great Valley and Emily Ellisen had five goals and one assist. Colleen O’Malley added a goal and three assists and Haley Sheehan and Kristina Hahn added a goal each while Stephanie Berger made six saves.

Jackie Roebuck led the Tigers (7-12) with three goals and two assists while Melanie Sarcinello had three goals and one assist and Lauren Rutecki had two goals and an assist.

Merion Mercy 20, Harriton 14

Margaret Corzel pumped in eight goals, Emily Corcoran added five tallies and Kimmy Keating had two goals and two assists as the seventh-seeded Bears (14-6) outscored the Rams. Carli Sukonik led the Harriton (12-8) with six goals and Jess Rothstein had four goals and two assists while Betsy Hurtado tallied two goals.

Pottstown 13, Henderson 10

Kasey Mock pumped in six goals and Devon Yocom fired in five tallies to power the host Trojans (15-6) past the Warriors (7-13). Melissa Bonenberger made eight saves in goal for Pottstown while Lauren Glassy scored three goals and Meredith Kelly added two for Henderson.

Phoenixville 16, Sun Valley 13

Liz Jones netted six goals and while Ali Allen and Becky Porter added three apiece as the host Phantoms (11-6) offset an eight-goal outburst by the Vanguards’ Kelly Custer to claim the first-round win. Krissy Finn added three goals for Sun Valley (11-8). Chelsea DiFebbo posted nine saves for the Phantoms. Custer, a junior, finished her year with 115 goals.

Villa Maria Academy 19, Owen J. Roberts 7

Chelsea Fay tallied five goals, Mayy Liva had four and Kyrstin Mackrides added three as the host Hurricanes (19-2) cruised to the first-round win over the Wildcats (10-9). Missy Schweitzer led OJR with four goals.

Springfield-Delco 16, Interboro 3

Sam Tajirian had three goals and an assist and Rebecca Hartrum contributed two goals and four assists to lead the host Cougars (16-3) to the first-round triumph over the Bucs (11-7). Steph Parcell led Interboro with two goals.

Unionville 14, Mount St. Joseph 2

Lindsey Smith, Heather Wentz and Erica Midiri scored three goals each as the host Indians (10-7) cruised past the Mount (12-6) to advance to a second-round game at Vilal Maria. Lorrie Beppel scored both goals for the Magic.

Abington 21, Council Rock North 3

Rachel Dirksen tallied five goals, Kailee Ashby had four and Lisa O’Donnell, Maddy Evans and Kristen Dunphey added three goals each as the host Ghosts (18-1) routed their league rivals in a Class AAA opener. Alisha Aquilino stopped nine shots for the Ghosts. Council Rock North closed at 11-7.
