Jake Bergey scored his fourth goal 20 seconds into overtime Saturday night to keep the Philadelphia Wings undefeated as they claimed a 15-14 National Lacrosse League victory over the Buffalo Bandits before 10,542 at the Wachovia Center.
Athan Iannucci added four goals and three assist for the Wings (3-0) while goalie Rob Blasdell recorded 48 saves.
Iannucci and Bergey each had hat tricks in the first half to stake the Wings to a 9-5 lead, but Buffalo responded with a strong third period and seized a 14-13 lead late in the game. Jamie Rooney (two goals, one assist) tied it to send it into OT for the Wings.
Geoff Snider added two goals for the Wings while last week’s NLL rookie of the week, Merrick Thomson, had one goal and four assists. Dan Marohl added a goal and three assists while Taylor Wray had a goal and an assist.
Mark Steenhuis and Kein Dostie led the Bandits (2-2) with four goals and one assist each while John Tavares added two goals and five assists. Michael Thompson posted 37 saves.
The victory keeps the Wings atop the East Division standings with Minnesota (3-0), one full game and two losses ahead of Toronto.
Philadelphia now has two weeks off before resuming its schedule Feb. 15 at the Colorado Mammoth.
