Springfield-Delco boys down CB East, 11-8, for third place in District 1; Emmaus boys win District 11 crown

    Josh Cavanaugh, John Cugini and Joe Venit each scored hat tricks as Springfield-Delco toppled Central Bucks East, 11-6, tonight in the District 1 third-place game at Villanova University.

    The victory means the Cougars (17-5) will play Hempfield – the District 3 runner-up – in the first round of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association playoffs Tuesday at Gov. Mifflin at 7 p.m.

    CB East (16-5), meanwhile, will meet District 12 champion La Salle in the first round Tuesday at Abington at 5 p.m.

    The Patriots took an early 2-0 lead on scores by Brian Urban (three goals) and Rich O’Brien, but Springfield outscored East 6-1 to take a 6-3 lead. The Pats never got closer than three goals.

    Cugini scored three consecutive goals at one point in the run. Colin Keegan added a goal and two assists for the Cougars and Larry McLaughlin scored once while Bobby Gildea added two assists.

    Matt Hughes contributed two goals for CB East while Matt Brodzik had a goal and an assist and Alex Fetterman scored once.

Springfield-D 1-5-1-4 – 11

    CBE scoring: Brian Urban 3g, Matt Hughes 2g, Rich O’Brien 1g, Matt Brodzik 1g, Alex Fetterman 1g.

    Springfield-Delco scoring: Josh Cavanaugh 3g, Joe Venit 3g, John Cugini 3g, Colin Keegan 1g, Larry McLaughlin 1g.

    Saves: Chase Kudla (CBE) 4; Austin Kaut (S-D) 6. 

District 11 championship game

Emmaus 20, Parkland 6

    Tate Klidonas, Mic Debellis and Dan Kinek scored four goals apiece and Alex Kuehner had two goals and three assists as the host Green Hornets (18-4) routed Parkland for the District 11 championship.

    Emmaus will host District 1 fifth-place finisher Lower Merion Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the opening round of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association championships.

    The Green Hornets dominated from the start, bolting to an 8-1 lead in the first quarter as Klidonas was strong on the face-off X. Emmaus has won seven straight games.

Parkland 1-3-1-1 – 6

District 7 championship

Mt. Lebanon 3, Shady Side Academy 2

    Chris White had two goals and William Round was strong in goal as Mt. Lebanon (13-7) claimed the District 7 championship.

    In the third-place consolation game, North Allegheny (13-7) defeated Seneca Valley (10-9), 10-8, to qualify for the PIAA tournament.

Girls – District 11 championship

Southern Lehigh 17, Nazareth 10

    Lindsey Derstine pumped in six goals and Sam Risi added three as the Spartans (18-4) defeated the Eagles (19-3) for the District 11 title and a berth in the PIAA tourney. Southern Lehigh will face Unionville, the fifth-place finisher from District 1, in the first round of states Tuesday at Emmaus at 5 p.m.

    Amy Rydeen led Nazareth with five goals.
