For 33 minutes the University of Scranton stood toe-to-toe with #12-ranked Gettysburg College today in an NCAA first-round game at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
Then the Bullets shot down the Royals’ dream of pulling off the upset, holding Scranton scoreless over the final 27 minutes of play to pull away for an 8-3 victory.
Junior midfielder J.C. Ward scored back-to-back goals during a four-minute span in the third period as the Bullets, now 12-6, scored five straight goals to break away from a 3-3 tie.
Scranton, which ended its 2011 season with a 9-8 record, received a goal each from junior attacker Daniel Slade (Central Bucks East), senior attacker J.P. Barton and freshman attacker Gus Sturm (Conestoga) and an assist from junior midfielder Matt Glenn (Central Bucks East) and sophomore attacker Taylor Nelson (Downingtown East).
With sophomore goalkeeper Ben Worthington (Archbishop Wood) making 10 of his game-high 14 saves in the first half, the Royals were in prime position to knock off the Bullets. They took advantage of a one-minute slashing penalty to score a man-up goal, as Sturm connected, unassisted, for his seventh goal of the season to tie the game at 3-3 with 13:57 remaining in the third period.
Scranton’s joy, however, was short-lived. Ward answered Sturm’s goal with an unassisted one of his own forty seconds later to give Gettysburg the lead for good and followed with another four minutes later off an assist from Lynch to extend the lead to 5-3.
Manilla closed out the scoring in the third period with an unassisted goal with 5:33 left.
The Bullets turned their defense up a notch after intermission, limiting Scranton to just five shots on goal, four of which were saved by Gettysburg sophomore goalkeeper J.T. McCook, who finished with 12 altogether
Scranton senior Patrick Cefalu further established his reputation as one of the top specialists in the nation by winning 10 of 15 face-off attempts and finishing with five ground balls. He ends his career as the Royals’ all-time leader in ground balls with 443 and a face-off percentage of .629 (741 of 1178).
Women’s Division III First round
College of New Jersey 17, Gwynedd Mercy College 0
Gwynedd-Mercy had their season come to a close in falling to top-ranked College of New Jersey in a first-round game of the 2011 NCAA Tournament.
The Griffins had their hands full against the undefeated Lions, the #1 team in the IWLCA Top 25 Poll. TCNJ would dart out to a 7-0 lead just five minutes into the contest.
Kathleen Notos and Alison Jaeger each netted four goals to pace the Lions (18-0).
Gwynedd was outshot, 21-4. Senior Colleen Dellostretto (Upper Moreland) had three of the four shots.
Senior goalie Trisha Timony recorded four saves. TCNJ keeper Mary Waller made three stops.
It was the last game for the team’s four seniors, Dellostretto, Timony, Kristi Mackin (St. Hubert) and Kristie Pollock (Unionville). The four have combined for a 43-31 record, three CSAC Championship Game appearances, two ECAC Tournament berths, an NCAA Tournament bid, and one conference title.
