Ninety-eight seconds were likely the deciding seconds during 10th-ranked Haverford College’s 10-7 loss to No. 17 Gettysburg College in Friday afternoon’s Centennial Conference men’s lacrosse tournament semifinal on host Dickinson College’s Biddle Field.
The Fords (11-4) were eliminated from the tournament by a Gettysburg (11-5) squad that has dealt Haverford half of it’s losses during the season.
The Fords trailed 5-3 as the second period wound down but Phillip Valliant and Myles Monaghan scored 47 seconds apart to pull even with the Bullets as the two teams entered the halftime break.
After an exchange of goals made the score 6-6 in the third period, Gettysburg reeled off three unanswered tallies in a span of 98 seconds to build a cushion that, this time, it would not salt away.
Monaghan scored again, midway through the fourth quarter, to pull the Fords within two but the only other goal over the remaining six minutes came from a Gettysburg team that will now take on top-seed and sixth-ranked Dickinson, which defeated fourth-seed Ursinus College, 12-3, in Friday afternoon’s opening semifinal pairing.
Monaghan scored three times for the Ford to lead the offensive attack while Valliant chipped in with a pair of goals. Gettysburg’s Henry Tesar and Pat Sartory led the Bullets with three goals each.
Joe Banno took the loss in goal for Haverford, surrendering nine goals and making seven saves. Gettysburg’s J.T. McCook earned the win making 16 saves.
Haverford must now sit and wait for NCAA tournament bids to come out to find out if its season will continue.
