Philly girls’ high school previews: Suburban One’s Upper Merion (Continental), Central Bucks West (American)

March 27, 2011 by Chris Goldberg

Team Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 3/27/11

This is one of a series of previews for the 2011 Philly lacrosse season

Team: Upper Merion

Coach: Angie Yanocha, 6th season

Last year’s record: 7-10 overall, 5-9 league

Key returnees:
Amanda McAteer, Sophomore, Midfield,
Mel Ryan, Junior, Attack
Casey Griffith, Junior, Midfield
Allison Frymoyer, Junior, Goalie
Tammy Slaughter, Senior, Defense

Others to watch:
Liz Botto, Freshman, Midfield

Coach’s Outlook for 2011 season:
“We only graduated 4 seniors, but we are still a young team with several sophomores and freshmen who will be potentially stepping into starting roles. We have a mix of grade levels and experience and need to continue to work on coming together as a team. Being one of the schools without turf, it’s been difficult trying to prepare for the season, as we’ve been forced indoors more than we’ve been able to be on our field. We have a lot of work to do, but we have some very promising players who will hopefully step up and lead the team in the right direction. Our goal is to improve on our 7 wins from last year and continue to become more competitive in our SOL American Conference.”

Team: Central Bucks West

Coach: Tara Schmucker, 2nd season

Last year’s record: 3-15

Key returnees:
Trish Kilgannon, Senior, Defense, Captain
Tara Shugars, Junior, Midfield, Captain
Amanda Parker, Junior, Midfield
Sammie Hogan, Sophomore, Goalie

Others to watch:
Steph Cooper, Midfield, Junior
Jane Savard, Sophomore, Attack

Coach’s Outlook for 2011 season:
“We are a young team and just hope to gain experience like last year. Overall, we expect strong competition in our league and just hope to develop teamwork and strategy throughout the season as well as continue to gain momentum.”
