Wednesday’s women’s roundup: Penn downs Hofstra; La Salle, Lehigh win

No. 4 Penn ventured out on the road for the first time this season on Wednesday, picking up an 8-4 win over host Hofstra in women’s lacrosse action.

Senior Giulia Giordano led the way for Penn with three goals and an assist as Penn broke open a 4-3 game with a four-goal run in the second half. Emily Leitner had nine saves once again in goal for her third win of the season.

Kelly McCallion (Notre Dame), Erin Brennan, Bridget Waclawik, Caroline Bunting and Tory Benson each added a goal for the Quakers (3-0). Maryann Miller (Ridley) led Hofstra (2-3) with a pair of goals.

La Salle 9, Presbyterian 7

Sophomore Melanie Sarcinello (Marple Newtown) notched a hat trick for the visiting Explorers.

Sarcinello put the Explorers ahead 7-6 with 17:20 to play in the second half to give La Salle the lead for good and help the squad improve to 3-2 on the season.

Junior Megan Corliss (Archbishop Carroll) made 12 saves in goal for La Salle and junior Nora McGurkin (Penn Charter) picked up five ground balls.

Lehigh 19, Siena 7

Lauren Dykstra had five goals and an assist as the Mountain Hawks (2-3) coasted.

Seven other Mountain Hawks finished with multiple points, including senior Allison Thomas (Conestoga), who had three goals and an assist. Junior Kelly Draper posted four (two goals, two assists) while junior Lauren Murray recorded three (two goals, one assist).

Four others had two points, including freshman Julie Tatios (Bayard Rustin), who netted the first two goals of her career. Freshman Kate Cooper (Abington) also posted her first-career point behind an assist.

Jacksonville 13, Temple 12

Charlotte Swavola (Cheltenham) had three goals and an assist for the visiting Owls (1-3) in defeat.

Steph Parcell (Interboro), Karly Cohen and Missy Schweitzer (Owen J. Roberts) each added two goals and an assist.

Rutgers 12, St. Joseph’s 4

Grace Dinn and Jen Peters scored two goals apiece for the Hawks (2-3).

UMBC 8, Delaware 5

Corrine Drost led the Blue Hens (2-3) with two goals.

Division III

Lynchburg 14 Ursinus 7

Ursinus (1-1) was led by junior midfielder Alyssa Thren (Upper Perkiomen) who tallied five goals, with senior midfielder Allison Furman (Boyertown) scoring three. Junior attack Kim Peifer (Methacton), senior attack Lindsey Urban (Central Bucks East) and junior attack Emily Diehl each had a goal in the loss. Peifer added in an assist.

Bryn Mawr 17 Penn St.-Abington 4
Kathleen Magner had six goals, Gabby Marangell four and Miranda Gordon-Zigel three for Bryn Mawr in its opener.

Katelyn Haas (Lower Moreland) had three goals for the Nittany Lions.

Marymount (Va.) 19, Neumann 8

Meghan Garsey scored three goals for the Knights in defeat while Alexandra Bohen (Upper Merion) and Erica Crabtree (Spring-Ford) each notched two. Sam Kotowski made eight saves in net.

Colorado College 13, Swarthmore 11

Sophomore Annalise Penikis (Strath Haven) was the Garnet’s offensive star once again, scoring five goals for the second-consecutive game in the tough loss at Colorado College. Freshman Corinne Sommi added a hat trick while Nicole Vanchieri, Marie Mutryn and Annelise Mowry also found the back of the net.
