Morgan Leonard picked a great time to record her first career hat trick.
Delaware sophomore found the back of the net with just 11 seconds left in the overtime period to help the women’s lacrosse team defeat host Lehigh, 10-9, today.
“Today was a great win for Delaware,” said UD head coach Kateri Linville. “Last year, Lehigh stole a win from this team on our home turf. This year the team refused to lose. It comes down to executing under pressure. Morgan Leonard stepped up and hit the game-winner and Ali Libertini stepped up and grabbed the game-winning draw.
Delaware, which improved to 2-1 on the season, avenged a 12-11 loss to the Mountain Hawks in the 2010 season opener. The Blue Hens are now 23-7 all- time against Lehigh.
Leonard (at right) finished the day with four points, scoring three times while handing out one assist. Holly Burman and Kalyn McDonough (Unionville) each had a two- goal day. A senior attacker, Libertini posted a three-point day with one goal and a pair of helpers. Julianna Jeffers (Springfield-Delco) and Chelsea Fay (Villa Maria Academy) each tallied a goal for Delaware.
Lehigh suffered its first loss of the season and fell to 1-1, but got three goals and an assist from senior Lauren Dykstra, who was named the Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Kelly Draper was the only other Lehigh player with multiple goals. Allison Thomas (Conestoga) had three of the Mountain Hawks’ assists.
La Salle 9, Lafayette 8
Lauren McDermott (North Penn) had three goals and two assists and Sam Tulskie (Springfield-Delco) added two goals to spark the Explorers (2-1) past the Leopards.
St. Joseph’s 12, Wagner 5
Julie Mineweaser (North Penn) had three goals and an assist and Jen Peters scored three goals to pace the Hawks (1-1).
Boston College 14, Villanova 8
Justine Donodeo had three goals and two assist for the Wildcats (1-1) in their BIG EAST opener.
Maryland 18, Duke 11
No. 3 Duke (3-1) got three goals and two assists from Emma Hamm (Baldwin School) in its loss to the No. 1 Terps.
UMBC 13, American 10
Lisa Schaaf (Perkiomen Valley) had three goals for American (1-2).
Albany 8, Penn State 7
Despite a goal each from freshman Lizzy Carney (Unionville) and Jackie Eastman (Springfield-Delco), the Nittany Lions fell to 0-2.
James Madison 12, George Washington 5
Mary Kate Lomady (Abington) had a goal and two assists and Annie Brophy (Archbishop Carroll) scored once for No. 9 JMU in its opener.
Princeton 9, Johns Hopkins 8
Sam Ellis (Radnor) scored once for the Tigers in their opening-day win.
Monmouth 9, Columbia 8
Molly O’Brien scored twice and Olivia Salata (Archbishop Carroll) had a goal and an assist for Monmouth (1-1). Olivia Mann (Germantown Academy) scored twice for Columbia (0-1).
Division III
Haverford College 12, Susquehanna 4
Haverford College opened the season with a victory as Josie Ferri (Pennsbury) scored seven goals to give her 99 for her career. She also handed out an assist, picked up five ground balls and caused four turnovers. Alexa Pesce added four goals and Perrin Downing scored one and had two assists.
