Marple Newtown senior midfielder Kelly Collins has signed a National Letter of Intent to play Division I lacrosse at La Salle University.

Collins has started three years for the Tigers at a defensive midfield spot and also is a member of the National Honor Society. She plans to study accounting, criminal justice or law.

“I like the lacrosse program and it’s strong academically,” Collins said. “Those are two of the most important things.”

Collins will see familiar faces at La Salle, coached by Haverford High graduate Candace Taglianetti. Two freshmen at La Salle include Marple Newtown grads Melanie Sarcinello and Jackie Roebuck. Also, one of Collins’ teammates for the Lenape Premier club team, Garnet Valley senior Allie Henry, also has signed with La Salle.

“I talked to Jackie and Mel throughout the whole recruiting process and they love it,” said Collins.

Collins now is focused on the 2010 scholastic season. Marple Newtown recently hired former college coach Mary Anne Schiller as its new coach.

“I am excited; I think people don’t expect much from us,” said Collins. “But coach Schiller wants us to be committed and we played together in a fall league and we also have an indoor team. I think we’ll surprise some people.”

Overall, four Philly girls have signed with La Salle; the other two are North Penn’s Danielle Horn and Kaitlin Colbridge.
