Women’s recruit: Radnor’s Campbell picks Richmond for academics and campus

Radnor senior attack Courtney Campbell has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Richmond University.

Campbell was a key member of a Red Raiders team that claimed the first Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) championship. She scored 72 goals and added 35 assists, earning second-team All-Central League and Honorable Mention All-Phillylacrosse.com honors.

Campbell, although undecided on a major, picked Richmond for its strong academic programs and size.

“Definitely, the academics were important,” she said. “I also like Richmond because it is a smaller school, but it still has that big-school feeling with football and D1 sports.

“It’s really pretty and the campus is gorgeous. You also have the city of Richmond to go into. It’s not in the middle of nowhere.”

Last year Campbell helped the Red Raiders (25-1) win the Central League crown and finish 14th in the nation, according to Lacrosse Magazine. In 2010, Radnor figures to be the favorite to repeat due to its brilliant returning cast of seniors – seven of which have committed to Division I colleges and two of which have committed to defending Division III national champion Franklin & Marshall.

Campbell also played last year for the Philly1 team that won the crown at the National Championships and the Philly team that placed third in the Under Armour Underclassmen games.

Campbell, also a starter on the Raiders’ team that went 23-0 in 2008 and won the District 1 Class AAA title.

“Last year we lost a ton of seniors, but we did very well,” she said. “We lost only three seniors this year and we have a lot of returning starters.

“This is the year we need to fix up our mistakes, build forward and just get that really neat force. We all want the same goals we put forth to ourselves every year.”

Seniors can sign National Letters of Intent during the early signing period Nov. 11-18.
