Plymouth Whitemarsh rising senior face-off specialist Gryphin Kelly has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y.

Kelly was a contributor to a Colonials team that finished 12-7 and advanced to the District 1 playoffs. He plays club lacrosse for Rebel Elite and also has played for Team HEADstrong.

Kelly is undecided on a major, but is considering secondary education.

“Hobart had the whole package,” he said. “I made a real connection with the coaches. It’s not a huge school and in a smaller school you get to know the professors. They’ll meet you halfway if you put in the time.

“And the campus is amazing. It’s on the Finger Lakes (region).”

Kelly said his attributes at the face-off X are his speed and toughness.

“I have a pretty fast top hand and I get in and out fast,” he said. “I am pretty good with the counter and decent in a scrum.”

Kelly, who made the Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic lacrosse Association Showcase in June and the Fab 40 team at the Philly Lacrosse Showcase last November, is the second rising senior on PW to commit to a Division I college. Attackman Colin Joka committed to Marist last year.

“We lost a lot of seniors, but we have a lot of starters coming back, too,” Kelly said. “I’m hopeful we’ll do well next year.”
