Philly teams gear for Under Armour Underclassmen Games at Towson University

July 2, 2010 by Chris Goldberg

Philly boys’ and girls’ teams will shoot for gold this weekend in the Under Armour Underclassmen Games at Towson University (Md.).

Eight teams from regions around the country will compete in pool play Saturday and Sunday with the top four seeds advancing to the semifinals Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The championship games are slated for 3:30 p.m.

Both Philly teams (see rosters below) are in Pool A with Baltimore, New England and Upstate New York. Pool B features Long Island, New Jersey, Washington, D.C. and the Midwest teams.

The Philly boys team – coached by Springfield-Delco’s Michael Friel – open pool play Saturday at 10 a.m. against Baltimore on Field 1. Philly then meets Upstate New York at 1 p.m. on Field 2. On Sunday the Philly boys face New England at 11 a.m. on Field 2.

The Philly girls – coached by Downingtown East’s Caitlin Barbakoff – also open Saturday against Baltimore at 10 a.m., on Field 3. Next is Upstate New York at 1 p.m. on Field 1. On Sunday the Philly girls face New England at 11 a.m. on Field 4.

The Underclassmen Games are part of the Under Armour Lacroese Classic, which also features the Senior All-America Games at Johnny Unitas Stadium. The girls’ game is at 5:30 p.m. and the boys’ game follows at 8 p.m. (live on ESPNU).

The Philly girls’ team is fielding its first player from another region of Pennsylvania – Manheim Township rising junior midfielder Devon Schneider, who led her team to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association semifinals. The Philly girls’ team is very young, fielding three rising sophomores and seven rising juniors. Only five of the rising seniors have committed to colleges.

The Philly boys’ team is more experienced. Only one team member – Abington rising sophomore Matt Rambo – is not from the Class of 2011. Seventeen players have committed to Division I colleges.

The Philly boys’ and girls’ teams have two other connections – brother-sister pairs. Billy Donovan, a rising senior attackman at Unionville, is the older brother of girls’ team member Annabeth Donovan, a rising sophomore midfielder at Unionville.

Meanwhile, boys’ team rising senior Joey McCallion (Haverford School/midfielder-face-off specialist) is the older brother of girls’ team rising sophomore Nora McCallion (Notre Dame/attack-midfield).
