Today is the first official day of practice for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) lacrosse season.
This year marks the first year that the PIAA is sponsoring boys’ lacrosse and the first year it will hold boys’ as well as girls’ state championship tournaments. Here are the key dates and pieces of information to remember:
*First Practice Date – March 2
*Minimum Length of Preseason Practice – 3 weeks
*First Inter-School Practice or Scrimmage Date – March 7
*Maximum Number of Regular Season Inter-School Practices or Scrimmages – 2
*First Regular Season Contest Date – March 20
*Maximum Length of Regular Season – 9 weeks
*Maximum Number of Regular Season Contests – 18
*Last Regular Season Contest Date and District Deadline – May 23
*First Round of PIAA play (16 teams in one classification) – May 26
*PIAA quarterfinals – May 30
*PIAA semifinals – June 2
*PIAA Lacrosse Championships – Boys’ and girls’ doubleheader on Saturday, June 6 at HersheyPark Stadium
*Number of PIAA girls’ teams in the state: 153.
*Number of PIAA boys’ teams in the state: 152
*PIAA playoff berths (for both boys and girls): District 1: 7 teams; District 3: 4 teams; District 7: 3 teams; District 11: 1 team; District 12: 1 team.
