Omrod is promoted to head coach at Holy Ghost Prep after most recent coaching shuffle

Tony Omrod has been named head boys’ lacrosse coach at Holy Ghost Prep, athletic director Jim Stewart announced.

The hiring comes after Joe Manuli was forced to resign due to a sudden change in the time schedule of his full-time job. Manuli had been named head coach in July.

Omrod, a former assistant at Neshaminy, was the Holy Ghost JV coach in 2008 and 2009. Omrod also coached youth teams at the 4th– through 8th-grade levels for six years at Lower Bucks Lacrosse.

Omrod, who played college lacrosse at Towson University, said his coaching philosophy is simple.

“We’re going into this concentrating on fundamentals,” he said. “That’s the key.”

The Firebirds, who play as an independent, went 13-5 last year and fell to Upper Dublin, 10-9, in the first round of the District 1 playoffs.

This year Holy Ghost will play a number of Philly powers, including two-time defending state champion La Salle, Inter-Ac League power Malvern Prep, Suburban One powers Central Bucks East, Hatboro-Horsham, Upper Dublin and Pennsbury, Catholic League contenders Archbishop Wood and Lansdale Catholic and state quarterfinalist Carlisle out of District 3.

The Firebirds return a veteran team, including a pair of seniors that signed with Division I colleges; attackman Andrew Cacchio (Hartford) and goalie Andrijko Andrusko (Lafayette).

“This is the toughest schedule in the history of Holy Ghost Prep lacrosse,” Omrod said. “It’s only going to make the kids stronger. We’ll take the games one at a time.”
