The Strath Haven girls’ lacrosse team has been named the inaugural winner of the Sportsmanship Award, given by the Philadelphia Women’s Lacrosse Umpires Association.

Strath Haven was named the inaugural winner of the Philadelphia Women's Lacrosse Umpires Association Sportsmanship Award
Strath Haven was named the inaugural winner of the Philadelphia Women’s Lacrosse Umpires Association Sportsmanship Award. 1st row: Jess Borbee, Morgan Glassford, Kirsten WIlhelmson, 2nd row: Erica Connor, Katherine Restrepo, Bri Irons, Jenny Rowan, Katherine Burk, Kaelin Caldwell, 3rd row: Megan O’Donnell, Katie Sherry, Christina Labow, Hallie Yancey, Kristen Hansen, Lily Kovach, Suzanna Penekis, Bridget Sherry, Alex Bonser, Katie Tillman

The Panthers (18-5 record), coached by Rachel Busza, were co-champions of the Central League along with Harriton, Springfield-Delco and Radnor. They placed fifth in the District 1 tournament and advanced to the state tourney for the second straight year.

Co-Captain Morgan Glassford said the honor was special because it recognized teamwork and sportsmanship.

“I was so happy because our team was so close this year,” she said. “Our sportsmanship was very strong and we just played together.

“I think we knew that even talking back to refs isn’t something that will help us. We would rather talk to each other and adjust to what the refs are calling. We used that to our advantage and played composed as a team.”

Strath Haven’s season highlight was a 12-11 victory over eventual District 1 and PIAA champion Harriton on the final day of the Central League season.

“The highlight definitely was winning the Central League,” Glassford said. “Obviously, the Central League is great and just being one of the top teams in the league shows we are one of the better teams in the state.”
