The last time St. Joseph’s Prep and Archbishop Wood met, The Prep emerged with a tense 10-9 victory.

But today in the Catholic League semifinals at Radnor Memorial Park, the second-seeded Hawks dominated from the start and claimed a 13-5 win over the third-seeded Vikings.

St. Joe’s Prep (12-7) advanced to the league final Wednesday against defending champion and top-seeded La Salle at Plymouth Whitemarsh at 6 p.m. La Salle topped Cardinal O’Hara, 12-3.

Chase Young had five goals and an assist and Jace Liszka won 16 of 18 face-offs to lead the Hawks, who have faced La Salle for the Catholic League crown every year since 2002 (winning twice).

“Today we just came out here and executed,” said Young. “We knew we had to get to the finals and play La Salle there. That’s been our whole thing this year, playing in the finals and beating them and winning the PCL championship.

Young’s second goal put the Hawks up 3-0 in the first quarter. But, Archbishop Wood started to show some life with two straight scores, including one from John Berthcsi (three goals) with just 12 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
The Prep then outscored the Vikes, 6-0, in the second quarter to seize control.

“The previous meeting, we did in the second quarter what they did today,” said Archbishop Wood head coach Jim Beury. “We answered in the previous game and we just didn’t have an answer for them this time.”

The Hawks outshot the Vikings 18-5 in the first half. Defensively, the Hawks were in control for the final three quarters, with the help of some physical play.

“I think defense had everything to do with [the win],” said junior defenseman Andrew Benedict. “We came out strong, got our rotations down, and communicated better than we did last game. It was definitely one of our strongest defensive outings this season.”

The Hawks also won the all-important faceoff battle thanks to sophomore faceoff specialist Liszka.

“We always play like we could lose,” said Liszka. “We trained really hard for this game and it showed.

“I think it helped to get [the attackmen] going,” he added. “But it was mostly all them. They were great.”

Pat Walsh, Tyler Cliggett and Joe Walsh each added two goals for the Hawks.

Chris Rahill had two goals and an assist for Archbishop Wood.
