The #2-ranked Dickinson men’s lacrosse team captured its third consecutive Centennial Conference Championship, in dominant fashion, turning back #2-seed Franklin & Marshall, 16-2 on Saturday with many contributions from its Philly grads.
The host Red Devils (17-0) struck first as senior attackman Matt Cherry (Radnor) scored off a Will Scott (Emmaus) assist at the 10:57 mark of the first quarter. That was all the scoring in the early minutes as the score held at the end of one.
Sophomore midfielder Tyler White (Penn Charter) found the net with 5:35 to play in the half, and finished with two goals and one assist.
The Dickinson defense was outstanding in front of All-American goaltender Greg Hanley, keeping the Diplomats scoreless until the 9:45 mark of the fourth quarter.
Senior Peter Zouck anchored the defensive effort, causing three turnovers and controlling five ground balls. He intercepted a pass and went coast-to-coast to score the first goal of his collegiate career to give Dickinson a 4-0 lead.
The Red Devils did not let up after the break. Scott broke free, scoring just 55 seconds into the third quarter as Dickinson would stretch the lead to 12-0 before the Diplomats were finally able to put a goal on the scoreboard.
The grew stretched to 11-0 as White found senior Christian Beitel, giving Dickinson an 11-0 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Also, senior defenseman Chris Pianko (Central Bucks West) had three groundballs and three caused turnovers and sophomore midfielder Collin Farrell (Malvern Prep) had a groundball, while Andrew Salvitti (Salesianum School), and junior midfielder Nolan Funchion (La Salle) also contributed on Saturday. Freshman midfielder Greg Shildkrout (Germantown Academy) also is on the team.
Hanley finished with 15 saves and four ground balls to improve to 17-0 on the year as well.
AJ Reichert scored both goals for the Diplomats while Cameron Setian finished with seven saves for F&M, who falls to 11-6 on the season.
The Red Devils tie the school record with their 17th win, and become the first Centennial Conference team to finish the season unbeaten overall. Cannon matched conference tournament eight goals in the tournament and broke the tournament record with 11 points, adding an assist on Saturday and two in the semifinal. He tallied five goals to lead the way on Saturday.
Dickinson earns the conference’s automatic bid and will make its fourth straight appearance in the NCAA playoffs. The Red Devils are currently ranked second in the USILA National Coaches Poll.
