Girls’ lacrosse: Moorestown uses strong 2nd half to down Strath Haven, 9-5

Margaret Nissen broke a 5-5 tie less than two minutes into the second half and Moorestown never looked back, scoring four straight on its way to a 9-5 win over host Strath Haven in the inaugural “Play for the As” fundraiser. The event helps raise money for both Alzheimer’s Association and Autism Speaks.

Junior attacker Jessica Dadino led the Quakers with three goals as Moorestown, ranked No. 1 by Phillylacrosse.com and No. 2 in North America by TopLaxRecruits.com, improved to 15-0. The Panthers, ranked No. 6 by Phillylacrosse.com, are 13-3.

“I knew this was going to be a good game because it was a good game last year,” said Dadino. “I went out there on fire. I just knew I had to give it my all, I was fired up so I was ready to go.”

Dadino’s first goal gave Moorestown the early 1-0 lead just one minute into the game. But Strath Haven answered right back with two straight unassisted goals from Suzanna Penikis and Erica Conner.
However, Strath Haven’s short-lived lead was its only of the game. Frankie Angeleri scored twice and Mary Flick added one more to help the Quakers to a 5-3 advantage to end the half.

The Panthers did fight back early in the second half when Morgan Glassford tied things up with two quick goals. But after Nissen’s goal, Moorestown blanked the Panthers.

Junior Marie McCool, the Quakers’ top scorer, was held to one goal and one assist, but said her team’s balance is a strength.

“If another team tries to shut me down, I try my best to get it to other players,” said McCool, whose team plays at 12-0 Shawnee on Tuesday in a South Jersey showdown. “Our team has so much depth that shutting me down isn’t going to do anything. We have so many great attackers that of course I want to assist and at least do something for us.”

Hallie Yancey had a strong game in net for Strath Haven with 10 saves despite the loss. Shannon Keeler had six saves for Moorestown.

Strath Haven hosts Harriton Tuesday in a key Central League finale. If the Panthers win, they would finish in a tie for the league title with Harriton and as many as two other teams. Radnor and Springfield-Delco also have two leagues losses.
