From Press Release

The St. Joseph’s University men’s lacrosse team (5-10) was unable to overcome a 9-0 Marist run to open the game as the Hawks fell to the Red Foxes, 14-6, on Tuesday evening at Finnesey Field.

Freshman attack Pat Swanick (St Joseph’s Prep) led the Hawks’ offense with his third hat-trick of the season.

Marist is coached by St. Joe’s grad Keegan Wilkinson; one of his assistants is fellow St. Joe’s grad Frank Abruzzini.

Trailing 9-0 late into the second quarter, the Hawks retaliated with a 4-1 run of their own to close the deficit, 10-4. Swanick scored his first of three goals at the 8:39 mark, followed closely by a Marist goal just over three minutes later.

From there, freshman midfielder Bryan Garrahan (/Archmere Academy (Del.), Swanick, and sophomore midfielder Rob Watts (St. Joseph’s Prep) would each register a tally (4:19, 1:54, 0:48) to close out the first half. Playing in his final home game, senior attack Kyle Williams assisted on the latter two goals to move into a tie for ninth-place on SJU’s all-time list for career assists (41).

Marist (10-2) scored back-to-back goals to open the third (13:29, 6:46) to extend its lead back to eight goals, 12-4.

With 2:41 remaining in the third, Swanick picked up a ground ball off of a Marist turnover and sped down the field toward the visiting goal. In a one-on-one situation with Red Foxes’ goalkeeper Dave Scarcello, Swanick hit the back of the net for his third goal of the game.

The Red Foxes would tack on two more goals, one at the end of the third and one at the end of the fourth, sandwiched between sophomore attack Michael Dougherty’s (Malvern Prep) goal at the 6:03 mark of the third, assisted by Garrahan.

Swanick took six shots in the game with five landing on goal en route to his three-tally performance. Freshman defender Joe McErlean (Bishop Shanahan) picked up a team-high four ground balls while four additional Hawks picked up three ground balls apiece.

Sophomore goalkeeper Dustin Keen (Downingtown West) (5-10) was tagged with the loss, making four saves but allowing nine goals in 19:26. Senior Chris Moffa made six saves and allowed five goals in 38:33 of action while fellow senior Pat Kurowski held the Red Foxes scoreless in the final 2:01 while making one save in his first SJU appearance.

Marist was led by Joseph’s Radin’s five-point performance off of three goals and two assists. Colin Joka (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had one assist.

For the game, Marist held advantages in shots (44-33) and ground balls (42-29) and won 17 of 24 faceoffs. The Hawks were 13-13 in clears while the Red Foxes were 19-21. Marist was 3-of-6 in extra-man opportunities while the Hawks were kept to 0-of-8.

Saint Joseph’s will face Towson on the road this Saturday, April 27, in its regular-season finale. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
