Delaware took control early by scoring five straight goals in the first half and rolled to an 11-6 Colonial Athletic Association men’s lacrosse victory over host Saint Joseph’s Saturday afternoon at Finnesey Field.

The Blue Hens (5-8, 1-3 CAA) captured their first CAA victory of the season and extended their winning streak to three as Nick Diachenko, Brian Kormondy, and Danny Keane each scored two goals and freshman goalkeeper Conor Peaks continued his outstanding play in the nets.

Delaware sophomore Tyler Barbarich (Twist Lacrosse) continued to star on faceoffs for the Hens as he won 16 of 21 draws and picked up eight groundballs to help Delaware dominate possession.

With the victory, the Blue Hens kept their CAA Tournament playoff hopes alive. Delaware has two regular season games left on the schedule, including a home game vs. Penn State next Saturday evening at Delaware Stadium.

Saint Joseph’s (5-8, 1-4 CAA) lost its second straight and fell for the fourth time in its last five outings. Matt Sarcona led the Hawks with two goals and Dustin Keen (Downingtown West) made 13 saves.

Sophomore Will Farrell (St. Joseph’s Prep) picked up five ground balls and caused one turnover for the Hawks. Senior captain Ted Hospodar (St. Joseph’s Prep) took over the face-off late in the game, going 4-of-10 (.400) from the X.

Saint Joseph’s jumped out to 2-1 lead after Hall scored with 4:24 left in the opening stanza, but the Blue Hens took over from there as Kormondy started a 5-0 run that led to Delaware taking the lead for good at 6-2.

Diachenko, Delaware’s leading goal-scorer this year with 29, scored twice during the pivotal run. A man-up goal by Connor McRoy capped the run and a tally by Smith gave Delaware a 7-3 lead at the break.

After a goal by Sarcona four minutes into the second half pulled SJU to within 7-4, the Hens used another run to put the game away as Kormondy, Holland, and Keane scored consecutive goals to push the lead back to 10-4 early in the final stanza. Keane added his second goal with 5:07 left to push the advantage to 11-5.
