Boys’ lacrosse: La Salle, Conestoga fall to MIAA foes

April 5, 2013 by Chris Goldberg

It was a tough day today for two Philly boys’ lacrosse teams facing powers from the vaunted MIAA.

La Salle gave up five straight goals in the second half and saw Max Greene erupted for six tallies in a 10-5 loss to Gilman School at Drexel University.

And Conestoga, the three-time defending state champion, took a 17-3 loss on the chin to visiting Boys’ Latin, the top-ranked team in the TopLaxRecruits.com, Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse and Nike/US Lacrosse rankings.

La Salle (2-2) was leading the Greyhounds (6-1), 4-2, in the second half before the onslaught began.

Riley DeSmit scored with 2:40 left in the half to make it 4-3 and then Greene tied it for Gilman with 1:07 to play in the period.

Gilman took a 5-4 lead before Michael Rihm scored for La Salle early in the third period. Then Greene notched an incredible three goals – two after giveaways following face-off wins – within 31 seconds to make it 8-5. DeSmit later scored to make it 9-5 and Greene finished the job for the 10-5 final.

Andy Matthews added three assists for the Greyhounds and Tyler Ruhl and Chase Wittich also scored once.

Matt Rambo led La Salle with two goals while Steve Hudak and Adam Schaal also scored for the Explorers.

Meanwhile at Conestoga, Jake Scott scored two goals – but his Pioneers were down 16-0 when they occurred.

Boys’ Latin (10-0) raced to a 15-0 first-half lead and simply coasted the rest of the way. Colin Heacock had four goals in the first period to lead the unstoppable Laker attack.

Conestoga (2-3) also got a goal from Steve Hildebrand. Connor Ashton and Zach Schleicher each had assists.
