With the clock running out in the second session of overtime, freshman attack Kevin Wanke found an open spot behind the High Point defense and put his shot in the back of the net to lift the Lafayette men’s lacrosse team to a double-overtime victory over High Point on Wednesday evening, 10-9.
The Leopards were unfazed by two High Point goals in the final 1:29 of regulation to force the overtime session. They were able to hold the Panthers scoreless in the first four-minute overtime period and Wanke connected on his opportunity to snap a five-game Lafayette losing streak.
Sophomore attack Sonny Round led the Leopards’ offense with three goals and one assist, while freshman Morgan Westby (Episcopal Academy) added two goals and two assists, and sophomore Brian Bock (Spring-Ford) netted two scores.
Division II
Gwynedd-Mercy 14, Arcadia 6
Gwynedd-Mercy scored 10 unanswered goals in the first half to go on a defeat Arcadia in non-conference action.
Down 2-0, the Griffins (3-4) ran off 10-straight, including five to end the first quarter, and five to open the second. Gwynedd would head into the break up 10-3.
Senior William Beck (Archbishop Ryan) scored three of his game-high five goals in that stretch. Freshman Tony McCraw added two scores and three assists and senior Roy Bakeoven (Archbishop Ryan) contributed two goals and two helpers.
Chris Jacovino totaled three goals and teammate Austin Morris had a goal and three assists for the Knights (3-4).
Washington College 11, Haverford College 10
The Fords (3-5. 0-2) got three goals from jack Bodine in their near-upset of the No. 4 Shoremen (8-0, 2-0) in the Centennial Conference.
Muhlenberg 15, Swarthmore 5
Three Muhlenberg players – senior Doug Rheiner (Council Rock North), junior Tom Glancy and sophomore Jon Thomas – recorded hat tricks, while senior Michael Carpetto and sophomore Jason Mertz netted a pair of goals apiece.
F&M 10, Ursinus 9
Logan Panaccione had four goals for Ursinus (5-2, 0-2) in a tight Centennial loss.
Women’s
Division I
Princeton 18, Columbia 7
Sophomore Erin McMunn had a career-best nine-point game and freshman Alexandra Bruno scored a career-high six goals as Tigers defeated Columbia in the Ivy League.
Freshman Lexi Mazur (Strath Haven) had two draw controls, a groundball and a caused turnover.
Division II
West Chester 12, Bloomsburg 5
Tori Dugan (Bayard Rustin) led West Chester (4-0, 1-0 PSAC) with five points on two goals and three assists, as the Golden Rams exacted revenge on defending PSAC Champions (2-4, 0-1 PSAC).
Last season, these two bitter rivals met in the PSAC semifinals and Bloomsburg knocked out West Chester from the postseason tournament with a 15-11 win. The Huskies also took the regular-season meeting a year ago, 14-13 in overtime.
Division III
Cabrini 17, Alvernia 9
The Cavs captured their third consecutive game. The non-conference win improves the Cavaliers to 3-5 on the season. The Blue and White has outscored its opponents 51-15 during its three game win streak.
Six players accounted for Cabrini’s scoring, led by sophomore Lacie Doubet (Ridley), who tallied six points including a season-high with five goals. Fellow sophomore Melissa Scanzano (Haverford High) and freshmen Katie Lasater (Great Valley) and Nathalie Basunga (Springfield-Delco) each recorded four points on the win. Lasater posted four goal, while Scanzano and Basunga added three each.
Haverford College 23, Eastern 11
Hannah Morgan had five goals and Megan Gallagher had four for the Fords.
