Penn State Abington Men’s Lacrosse cancels remainder of 2013 season

March 21, 2013 by Chris Goldberg

From Press Release

Penn State Abington athletic director Shawne McCoy has announced that the remainder of the school’s 2013 men’s lacrosse schedule has been cancelled. Several factors led to the decision, most notably a small roster size and injuries.

“This is by no means a reflection on the members of the team or how hard they were working,” stated McCoy. “Lacrosse is a sport where substitutes are necessary and where teams rotate players every few minutes to stay fresh. Not having the capability to make substitutions doesn’t just make it hard to practice or play; it virtually eliminates their recovery time and as a result, makes them more susceptible to injury. I cannot in good faith continue to allow our student-athletes to be put in that kind of danger.”

“We’re committed to having a men’s lacrosse program here, but we are equally committed to the safety of our student-athletes,” said McCoy. “No one here is happy with this decision, but the numbers just didn’t work for us this year.”

McCoy said he was very gracious toward the handful of student-athletes that were practicing hard and competing for the last few weeks and trying to make it through this season. The department was also apologetic toward Abington’s opponents this season, as the late notice may have put their own schedules in a bind.

“I am very proud of the core group of student-athletes that stuck with the program this year,” stated McCoy. “They have met the high expectations we place on them on the field, in the classroom, on campus and in the community. I would also like to acknowledge the opponents that were on our schedule and commend them for their professionalism and understanding of our situation.”
