Women’s D3 roundup: Neumann improves to 6-1; Swarthmore wins 320 Challenge

The Neumann University women’s lacrosse team (6-1) defeated Eastern College 9-7 on a cold Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.

Lexy Wilkinson (Cherokee), Meghan Garsey (Kingsway) and Alexa McIntyre each netted two goals for the Knights. Lauren Frampton (Interboro)had five caused turnovers. Christina Hughes made two saves in net.

The Knights scored the first two goals of the game, both a man-down. Eastern responded with four straight goals. Neumann ended the half with three straight goals and took a 5-4 lead into halftime.

Rebecca Dolenti (Pottsgrove) gave the Knights two-goal lead just 19 seconds into the second half. The teams battled throughout the second half. Garsey scored the final goals of the game with 12:17 left on the clock to put Neumann up 9-7. The Knights held onto the ball and held on for the 9-7 win.

Swarthmore 17, Widener 5

Combining for nine goals, senior Annalise Penikis (Strath Haven) and junior Corinne Sommi led the Garnet over the Pride for the annual 320 Challenge matchup.

With the victory, Swarthmore improves to 4-0 on the season and the Pride drops to 2-2 with the loss. The Garnet remain ahead in the 320 Challenge standings with a 9-3 advantage.

Penikis finished with five goals and three assists, while Sommi collected four goals and one assist in the winning effort. Four other players contributed goals for the Garnet. Caroline Murphy snagged a team-high six ground balls, while Elyse Tierney and Nicole Vanchieri each swiped four draws.

Between the pipes, all three Garnet keepers had playing time combining for five saves – including three from freshman Connie Bowen in 20 minutes of action. Junior Michelle Ammerman played the entire first half making two stops.

Scranton 16, Cabrini 10

Sophomore Melissa Scanzano (Haverford High) led Cabrini, now 0-3, with five goals and freshman attacker Nathalie Basunga (Springfield Delco) added a pair.

Deanna Giorno (Central Bucks South) chipped in two goals for the Royals and goalkeeper Kathleen Smart (Archbishop Wood) made 12 saves.
