The No. 14 Drexel men’s lacrosse team won its fourth-straight game on Saturday, scoring the first six goals of the game against Bryant and cruising past the visiting Bulldogs, 11-5. Robert Church scored three goals and redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Cal Winkelman had 15 saves in his first collegiate start.
Church’s three goals leaves him with 99 in his career. He is just one goal shy of becoming the seventh Dragon in program history to reach 100 career scores. Frank Fusco and Ben McIntosh each added two for Drexel (4-1). Colin Dunster led Bryant (0-5) with three.
The Bulldogs controlled possession early in the first quarter, peppering Winkelman with 12 first-quarter shots including five on goal. The freshman was up to the task, however, staying in good defensive position and turning away all five shots the Bulldogs fired at him.
Drexel got on the board with 6:22 to play in the first quarter. Andrew Vivian, who finished with a goal and three assists to match Church’s team-high four points, found McIntosh in front of the goal. McIntosh fired a laser beam past Bryant keeper Tom Carey to put the Dragons on top, 1-0.
That goal opened the floodgates for the Dragons. They would score twice more in the next 1:22 of play, with Vivian feeding Church and Church finding Fusco to make it 3-0 with 5:00 remaining in the first quarter. The Dragons would add another score, Vivian’s unassisted goal, with 0:42 to play in the first quarter as they took a shutout into the second stanza.
They nearly kept Bryant off the board for the entire first half. After scoring the first two goals of the second quarter on Church and McIntosh’s second tallies, Drexel continued to frustrate Bryant. The Bulldogs fired ten more shots in the second quarter, with Winkelman making two saves, before finally breaking through with 11 seconds remaining in the half. Dunster worked his way inside and punched home his first goal to get the Bulldogs on the board, but they went into the half trailing Drexel 6-1.
For a brief period after intermission, it appeared that the Bulldogs might be able to climb their way back into it. They scored the first two goals after halftime, a 3-0 stretch dating back to Dunster’s goal with 11 seconds remaining in the second quarter. With 3:49 remaining in the third quarter, however, Church quieted the Bulldogs with his third goal of the day, takinga a pass from Aaron Prosser and finding the back of the net in the upper left corner to get Drexel back u p 7-3.
That goal started a 5-0 run for Drexel which lasted until a Bryant score with just 4:33 remaining in the game that essentially iced the contest away.
Jason Klunder (Conestoga) had four groundballs and a turnover from his midfield spot.
The win was the fourth straight for the Dragons, who came in ranked No. 14 in the latest USILA Coaches Poll. The Dragons are now 3-0 at Vidas Field on the season. They will return to action on Tuesday night when they visit Bucknell at 4:00 p.m. They will be back at Vidas Field next Saturday, hosting Mount St. Mary’s at 1:00 p.m.
